Television: Unless you want to go with a dish, there are not many alternatives to Comcast for many Utahns. I've had a dish before, and I do not care for it.
Comcast really gets you over a barrel because their cheapest digital cable package is $57.
$57 a month! What a ripoff.
You can save a little bit by foregoing the DVR. They charge $16 a month for this. Most of your favorite shows can be watched for free online.
For any substantial savings, you have to downgrade to the non-digital packages, which are really crappy (by design).
Internet: Here's where there is actually a little bit of hope. Alternatives to Comcast's cable internet service are: DSL, Satellite, Dial-up, and in some areas: wireless.
Satellite is crappy internet service. Dial-up is ridiculous these days. Wireless can be decent. DSL is usually pretty solid.
I was close to switching from Comcast's nearly $50 a month high speed internet service to Digis wireless' $30 a month service. However, I discovered that Comcast offers a cheaper internet service for $24.99 a month. I downgraded, and although I can tell a difference, it's still plenty fast.
I would love to see some genuine alternatives to Comcast's domination of cable television in Utah. Some cities have alternatives, but many do not. Post your replies here if you know of any!
